Can a rabbit get sick from eating their own poop?

i put my rabbit in a fenced in play area and sometimes it comes across its droppings and will eat one lol

will it get sick if it continues to eat them? Can a rabbit get sick from eating their own poop?
Although I've owned rabbits, I certainly am not an expert about their behavior...

However, this question made me think of a dog that I had when I was younger who displayed the same behavior.

I remember the vet saying that it wouldn't hurt the dog, and was pretty 'normal,' - but - she told us to encourage the dog not to do it (disposing of fecal matter immediately and training) because if they eat their own, they will eat other dog's stuff... the risk there would be if the other dog was carrying a disease or worms.

If your rabbit is fenced and just encountering his own droppings - based on my dog experience - I'd say he's fine.

Animals are pretty weird sometimes huh? Fun though.

Good luckCan a rabbit get sick from eating their own poop?
Rabbits only eat the soft, light brown stools, like this;http://www.threelittleladiesrabbitry.com鈥?/a>

See the comparison, the normal, round ones %26amp; the soft clumpy one. These ones are called ';Cecotropes';. A rabbit needs to eat this to reabsorb any Vitamins(especially Vitamin B12 %26amp; K) that it can't fully absorb when it first digests the food. He shouldn't eat the normal hard ones. Are you sure he is eating those? It shouldn't do him any harm however.

Hope this helps! xxx
For rabbits it is a normal behavior - they do it in the wild and get extra nutrients from it. Don't try to stop her... she really needs to do this to stay healthy.

If if was a dog... I would be concerned and check his/'her diet.

There is something missing in their diet when they do that. (Dogs).
No

they wont get sick, rabbits eat their poop and take in the nutrients they didn't absorb the first time round. Sounds disgusting but if it works for them and keeps them healthy then that's fine. Mine do it all the time I have 3 of them.
Hey i can see why your worried about your bunny but it really isnt bad at all! i have guinea pigs and they poop all the time just think of it as mushed up food turned into a brown coloured shape :D

Hope this helps DONT worry xx
No, not at all! My rabbit eats hers all the time! The vet said its actully good for them.
